Owl Peak Farms
We thank CC and our friends at Owl Peak Farms for renewing their sponsorship and we look forward to another season of events and meals at Owl Peak.
Owl Peak Farm is a registered 501(c)(3) that provides support for land restoration, water conservation and community development within our Northern New Mexico high desert rural community. Since our inception in 2010, we’ve practiced regenerative and organic farming and have worked to continually build infrastructure. With each property, we prioritize water conservation, drought resiliency, field regeneration, and erosion control. Each year we grow wheat, corn, beans, garlic, and fruit trees to improve the strength of the seed for our soil and arid weather conditions. Burn Ban Still in EffectCommunity: Fire Weather Watch until 08:00PM Saturday
FIRE WEATHER WATCH IN EFFECT SATURDAY BETWEEN 1PM AND 8PM FOR THE NORTHEAST HIGHLANDS AND PLAINS, UPPER RIO GRANDE AND LOWER CHAMA RIVER VALLEYS AND WEST CENTRAL NM AND DUE TO STRONG WINDS, LOW HUMIDITY AND AN UNSTABLE ATMOSPHERE... .Above normal temperatures, very low humidity values, strengthening westerly winds and an unstable atmosphere will result in critical fire weather conditions on Saturday afternoon and evening. High temperatures will be 15 to 20 degrees above normal and between 6 and 12 hours of single digit humidity values are expected. Westerly winds will increase early Saturday afternoon before peaking during the mid afternoon hours. Saturday will be the first of two days with critical fire weather concerns. One potential mitigating factor is if any fuels have experienced green-up after last weekend's precipitation. If so, that would help mitigate fire spread, if a fire starts. The National Weather Service in Albuquerque has issued a Fire Weather Watch...which is in effect from Saturday afternoon through Saturday evening. * AREA AND TIMING...This includes the Northeast Highlands and Plains (Zones 123 and 104), the upper Rio Grande and lower Chama River Valleys (Zone 121), the West Central Mountains and the West Central Basin and Range (Zones 105 and 109) Saturday afternoon through Saturday evening. * 20 FOOT WINDS...West to southwest winds 20 to 30 mph with gusts between 35 and 40 mph. * RELATIVE HUMIDITY...Minimum values between 4 and 8 percent. * IMPACTS...Any fires that develop will likely spread rapidly. Outdoor burning is not recommended. Note: Rio Arriba is under a burn ban * AFFECTED AREAS: NORTHEAST PLAINS ... WEST CENTRAL MOUNTAINS ... WEST CENTRAL BASIN AND RANGE ... UPPER RIO GRANDE VALLEY AND LOWER CHAMA RIVER VALLEY ... NORTHEAST HIGHLANDS News and Features
Advocates praise new law, say it establishes a necessary framework after U.S. Supreme Court’s Sackett decision. Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham signed a bill into law that advocates say will help restore the protections that waters in New Mexico lost following the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision in Sackett v. the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
This Secretarial natural disaster designation allows the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Farm Service Agency (FSA) to extend much-needed emergency credit to producers recovering from natural disasters through emergency loans.
I spotted several local Abiquiu, Medenales and El Rito folks amongst the thousands that attended the Hands Off protest against the Trump Administration at the Roundhouse on April 5th. It was heartening to feel our reach and passion around what is happening to our beautiful country. Many of Trump’s policies will affect us here locally.
The almost annual Bondy yard sale is scheduled for Saturday, May 17th, and Sunday, May 18th. Vendors donate to Northern Youth Project to participate, and we include an area of donated items where proceeds will go to that organization. So clear out your clutter and set aside for this worthy project.
One of Abiquiú’s attractive aspects is the Rio Chama. When I still lived in Berkeley/California and I told my friends that I was planning to move to New Mexico, I was met with shocked disbelief: “What? You’re moving to the desert???” When, in fact, I ended up living right by this beautiful river.
My relationship with barred owls began when I built my little cabin in 2002. That first winter a pair hunted from the branches of two large pines situated not far from the living room windows. These are large and very beautiful owls with mole brown striped feathers and a wingspan up to 50 inches.
We're thrilled to announce the latest updates for Jimmy Santiago Baca's 2025 Writers Retreat, promising an enriching and inspiring experience for all attendees. With a schedule packed with captivating workshops and performances, this retreat is an exceptional opportunity to enhance your writing skills and connect with a vibrant community of fellow writers.
We have less than a week until Tax Day here in the United States, which means it’s time for our annual set of Tax Preparation Options for our fellow procrastinators, ADHDers, and everyone else who also forgot about filing taxes until reading and/or writing this sentence.
When my husband Pete and I moved from Virginia to Abiquiu ten years ago, we bought a charming fixer-upper that hadn’t been lived in for over two years. So we inherited a bounty of wildlife that had made this sturdy house their home...
Found in sandy, dry areas.
Seen blooming in April on Chimney Rock Trail at Ghost Ranch. This beautiful little plant grows low to the ground with 5 to 11 silky leaflets. Flowers are showy, bright pink/purple with a lighter center and are over one inch long. Seed pods are curved and covered in silky, white hairs.
I accidentally mistyped the name Smishing, a combo of SMS and phishing, but I like Smushing as a name too. SMS is a text message, phishing is ‘fishing’, throwing a line out and hoping to get a ‘bite’. In this case, I found an article on the weird test messages I’ve been getting, sometimes just a Hello, sometimes asking who I am, and sometimes an invite to coffee or something like that.

Casa Urraca Press has created a place for locals in our area to recommend books to each other, and a place to find book suggestions with a personal touch.
This week, Kara recommends Mexican Gothic, by Silvia Moreno-Garcia: "I was captivated by the vivid imagery in this mildly creepy mystery with Gothic flair. I can't wait for other people I know to read it so I can share the experience!" |
Have a book to recommend? Send it to Zach at casaurracaltd@gmail.com – title, author, and the reason you suggest it.
The full Locals’ Picks list is available to view here on Bookshop.
A purchase from Casa Urraca's link helps support independent bookstores.
Abiquiu’s Casa Urraca Press earns a commission from every shopping trip that starts with the above Bookshop link—you can shop the entire Bookshop site in addition to the locals' picks. Plus, a percentage of every book (at least 10%) goes straight to independent bookstores. This is an opportunity to support small businesses with the same convenience as large online retailers.

Drawing From Nature: Bones and Blooms with Helen Byers at Ghost Ranch, May 4th-9th
At Ghost Ranch, Georgia O’Keeffe found inspiration in the desert around her. Flowers and animal bones were among her favorite subjects—often in combination. Here is your chance to explore how the same subjects inspire YOU. Refine your realistic drawing skills with a week in residence at historic Casa del Sol, amid the spectacular landscape where O’Keeffe lived and painted. We will draw desert bones and blooms from life. Instruction with daily demos will cover drawing techniques in charcoal (for the bones) and colored pencil with watercolor (for the flowers). Afternoons will offer free time to rest, explore the Ranch or sites nearby, or take a horseback ride or tour. Evenings will include guided nature walks, stargazing, and camaraderie around the courtyard fire. Space will be limited to 9. Some drawing experience required. Join us! Please call 505.685.4881 or 505.685.1019 to register for this workshop. Program details here.

Mariposa
Mariposa, like the butterfly she’s named for, can be shy at first, but with patience and love in the chrysalis of your home, she’ll unfurl her wings and show her true colors. She enjoys peaceful moments, soft places to land, a windowsill nook and the occasional flutter outdoors in a safe space. Gentle with dogs and full of quiet potential, this delicate 1-year-old Torbie Point Siamese is a little flutter of magic, waiting to transform in the right hands. Mariposa is available for adoption from the shelter, open Monday-Saturday 11am-4:30pm; she goes home spayed, up to date on vaccines, and microchipped.
