Giliastrum acerosum Phlox Family (Polemoniaceae) Found in dry, open, gravelly areas Seen blooming in April in Poshuouinge, Santa Fe NF Although it grows only three to six inches tall Spiny Blue Bowls are noticeable because of their deep blue flowers. Flowers are ½ inch across with a bright yellow center. Leaves are needle-like and stems woody. Native Americans massaged the crushed plant on cramping muscles. Source. Oh I remember these well not just the jewel like blooms but because I saw them one day - the last day I ever visited this hill that over looks all of Abiquiu - There was a turkey rock I loved and visited with on a weekly basis and then one day someone had tampered with the petroglyph I loved so well....I never went back...it broke my heart.
