Holding Out Against New Technology, Interview with David Michael Kennedy

By Jessica Rath

Click to Read
Once upon a time, a photographer had to carefully insert a roll of a tightly-wound plastic strip into the camera, making sure that the perforation on each side of the strip would line up perfectly with the little gear teeth which transported the strip. It was called film. When you had it securely installed (which could be tricky) you could take up to 36 pictures. You had no idea how they’d turn out until the film was developed – another complicated procedure  which professional photographers performed in their own darkrooms, while ordinary folks would use a commercial lab.

Neighbors Helping Neighbors

It was just a little before 5 PM Wednesday when Brian and I noticed a plume.  The color of the smoke indicated that it was likely a structure fire and it indeed it was.

Please help Faustin Martinez and his family. They just lost their house and all their possessions to a fire that destroyed everything. They don't have insurance.

Faustin is a disabled, single father who is taking care of his autistic son, Rudy, and his son, Elijah, who suffered traumatic brain injuries. His other son Josiah, who is a college student, will manage this GoFundMe page.

They literally need everything! Once they're able to secure a new living space, they'll need furniture, kitchen appliances, plates, towels, shoes, clothes -- please try and imagine the total despair the family must be feeling now. Please help to give them some hope, to believe there's a future.
Any Help Is appreciated.    Visit gofundme

The Locals’ Picks Book List

Zach Hively
Casa Urraca Press has created a place for locals in our area to recommend books to each other, and a place to find book suggestions with a personal touch.
Picture
This week, Lauren recommends Emily Wilde's Encyclopaedia of Faeries, by Heather Fawcett: "This sort of book makes me feel so cozy and happy. Emily Wilde is a Cambridge professor who studies fairies. Yes, fairies. She's the sort of person who puts footnotes in her journal. And we get to read them! She dislikes people, yet she has to go on an adventure to figure out the strange, handsome newcomer (named Wendell Bambleby) while also on the brink of a breakthrough on her fairie studies. Such fun!"

Have a book to recommend? Send it to Zach at casaurracaltd@gmail.com – title, author, and the reason you suggest it.

The full Locals’ Picks list is available to view here on Bookshop.

A purchase from Casa Urraca's link helps support independent bookstores.

Abiquiu’s Casa Urraca Press earns a commission from every shopping trip that starts with the above Bookshop link—you can shop the entire Bookshop site in addition to the locals' picks. Plus, a percentage of every book (at least 10%) goes straight to independent bookstores. This is an opportunity to support small businesses with the same convenience as large online retailers.

Gus

Gus. Black as a moonless night and twice as mysterious (just kidding, there is zero mystery with this guy.) This bold kitten enters every space like he’s got something to say. One smol kitten. One very expressive, high-flying, ta-DA! tail. Infinite cuteness. Unlimited charisma. Adopt this walking exclamation point!

Guthrie

Guthrie needs a unicorn. He has been patiently waiting for his person since December 4th, 2024 in various shelters—yet somehow this sweet, 2-year-old Australian Cattle Dog mix still greets us with a wagging tail and hopeful eyes. He’s kind, gentle, great with people and other pups, and a perfect 52 lbs of love. So what’s the catch?

It’s not his heart. It’s not his behavior… It’s his allergies.

Guthrie didn’t always have allegeries though—we think he developed them in a new environment in a new state, so we are holding out hope that maybe, just maybe, now that he’s back in his homeland, his autoimmune system will relax a bit? He’s walked a long road, but now there’s mesa and mountain dirt under his paws, blue corn skies above, and the scent of chile in the air. Let the wind carry this prayer: that this good boy finds his good people under these good New Mexico skies. Mijo, the land remembers you. Now let’s find your family—may the milagros begin. (Adopt Guthrie; black and white adult dog)
