In GratitudeWe thank the El Rito Library for renewing their sponsorship.
The library also offers live tutoring for students in all grades.
The library will also be part of the 37th El Rito Studio Tour. Visitors will be treated to our annual chocolate extravaganza, and have the opportunity to see and purchase quilts created by the El Rito Quilters Guild. Their beautiful work will be on display for all to enjoy. In addition, the library will have live music for those visiting to enjoy. September will also be the month for our annual board meeting. In addition to the September events, we have been busy making needed repairs to our building. A new ramp has been constructed to replace the one that was in poor shape. A large bulge in the main room of the library adobe wall has been repaired and a new roof is scheduled to be in place soon. New lighting will be installed in the library’s main room to replace the outdated fluorescent lights. Our heating system will be upgraded to a more efficient and cost-effective one. The ground behind the library will be transformed into a usable space for patrons and will include several native pollinator plants provided by the Xerces Society for Invertebrate. Conservation. If you are interested in becoming a sponsor either at a basic or platinum level get in touch and find out how we can support your business. Email

Whenever I get the chance to talk to an Abiquiú “native” I’m delighted to be able to learn more about the village’s history. With cameras, computers, and mobile phones just about every trivial activity is being immortalized these days, to the degree that it seems like information overload at times. However, if we go back some thirty or fifty years, the situation changes, and more drastically so the further back in time we go. That’s why I’m so grateful when people who grew up in Abiquiú agree to an interview, so we can preserve a sliver of the past.
A court settlement revealed that a lobbying group opposing medical malpractice reform was funded by personal injury lawyers — but not before it helped kill legislation aimed at reducing costs for health care facilities. Now, looming federal changes could put rural providers out of business.
Health officials on Monday reported New Mexico’s first human case of plague in a 43-year-old Valencia County man.
Nearly 1,200 candidates filed paperwork Tuesday to run for municipal offices across New Mexico, with mayoral races from major cities to small villages drawing the most attention in the 2026 election cycle
As you may imagine, traveling with 160 pounds of dog is a logistical challenge in any configuration. Ten 16-pound dogs? One 120-pound beast and forty one-pound chihuahuas? Makes me think I have it easy, what with just two dogs sniffing either side of 80.
A few weeks ago, Google invited me to try out Gemini. I have no idea how this AI program differs from any others out there, but it’s free, and I wanted to see whether it could help me visualize some design ideas that have been rolling around in my head for a while.

This year I'm on a seemingly never-ending quest to retire, and remain alive doing it. My plan is to stop working on computers completely and that means not to refurbish and give away computers anymore. I plan to give away all my spare parts and all my computer repair toys that I have. If you’re interested in picking up the ball and running with it, please let me know.

Scotty Mitchell I love painting on site in nature and the area around Abiquiu and Ghost Ranch are among my favorite places. I am looking to convey the land’s spirit, its numinosity, while at the same time creating a piece of art that is more than the landscape, which can be enjoyed on many levels, both representational and abstract. The incredible variety of form and color and the immense scale which northern New Mexico offer have been a joyous inspiration. Fishing NewsDustin wanted to share this small mouth bass he caught at Abiquiu Lake on Friday night at the cove North of the boat ramp.
The Locals’ Picks Book List
Zach Hively Casa Urraca Press has created a place for locals in our area to recommend books to each other, and a place to find book suggestions with a personal touch.
Have a book to recommend? Send it to Zach at casaurracaltd@gmail.com – title, author, and the reason you suggest it.
The full Locals’ Picks list is available to view here on Bookshop. A purchase from Casa Urraca's link helps support independent bookstores. Abiquiu’s Casa Urraca Press earns a commission from every shopping trip that starts with the above Bookshop link—you can shop the entire Bookshop site in addition to the locals' picks. Plus, a percentage of every book (at least 10%) goes straight to independent bookstores. This is an opportunity to support small businesses with the same convenience as large online retailers. FloraFlora: Straight out of the “wise old wizard” starter pack rocking the Gandalf chic look with those ear tufts. No need for a Magic 8 ball, shes ready to deliver a prophecy about your future! Behind those mystical vibes is a 5mo goofy, playful kitten who *might* be handing out spells, but she is also ready to hand out unconditional love and forever purrs. Flora goes home spayed, microchipped, and up to date on vaccines—ready to enchant her forever family! We are open to walk-in adopters Monday-Saturday 11am-4:30pm.
DiorMove over Paris runway, Dior’s making waves—in the kiddie pool! This 2yo heartthrob isn’t just handsome, he’s a splash-zone superstar. Forget designer handbags—his accessory of choice is a cheap plastic pool filled with a few inches of water, where he cannonballs like he’s auditioning for Baywatch. Dior is both an athlete and total goofball: he’ll hike mountains with you, then bellyflop into the nearest puddle with zero shame. He’s house-trained, knows sit and shake, loves girl dogs, and invited our office cat Tux to a pool party. Spoiler: Tux RSVP’d “no.” He goes home neutered, vaccinated, chipped, and with six months free heartworm prevention, and his adoption fee is waived! www.espanolahumane.org
Great Pyrenees for AdoptionWe are looking to re-home our Great Pyrenees Beaux. We aren’t home enough to spend quality time with him. He is about 5 years old, house trained, super friendly, good with cats, chickens, and other dogs. He needs a fenced area or an area where it’s ok to roam. If you would love to have him as a family member please contact
