For the last three nights I have been awakened by a bird singing at around 3AM. The first and second nights I heard three short cheeps and a strange buzzing call. These calls were repeated a number of times. Last night the bird that I heard made three soft calls a number of times. No buzzing. Mystified by the night song occurring just outside my window I finally did a bit of research on the sounds of birds made by the nightjar family because, although these calls were different, I am familiar with the species in general – especially the whippoorwill. I used to get those annoying ReCaptcha grids a lot more. You know, the ones where you have to pick all the squares that have a bicycle, or a car, or a bus, or, whatever. I get those less these days, though there are still websites asking me to prove I’m human. Read More

A few years back we got to watch on Camera as a Say's Phoebe built a nest, laid eggs and watched as the baby birds grew and eventually fledged.
This year we have a bird on a wire. A hummer has built her nest on an extension cord. We've placed a camera and have watched as the bird laid her egg. Looks like it will just be a single. Gestation if 16-19 days so we'll keep you posted!

Casa Urraca Press has created a place for locals in our area to recommend books to each other, and a place to find book suggestions with a personal touch.
This week, Zach recommends Talking Leaves Scrapbook, by Vivian Mary Carroll: "A new, forthcoming release from Casa Urraca Press and this phenomenal New Mexico poet & IAIA grad. There's rock and roll in these pages, and heartbreak, and experiences of being Native (thinking particularly here of the poem "Crouching Indian"). Jimmy Santiago Baca, who championed this author, says that 'Her poems resonate with a deep belonging, they roam sniffing out the meaning of things, discovering the lived past still persists in everything her sensibilities languish in, plucking with words the spines of light that exist in memory and making them sparkle before her mind ... and ours.' We published this book at Casa Urraca because we would gladly, and easily, recommend it to anyone."
|
Have a book to recommend? Send it to Zach at casaurracaltd@gmail.com – title, author, and the reason you suggest it.
The full Locals’ Picks list is available to view here on Bookshop.
A purchase from Casa Urraca's link helps support independent bookstores.
Abiquiu’s Casa Urraca Press earns a commission from every shopping trip that starts with the above Bookshop link—you can shop the entire Bookshop site in addition to the locals' picks. Plus, a percentage of every book (at least 10%) goes straight to independent bookstores. This is an opportunity to support small businesses with the same convenience as large online retailers.

Andrea performs a one-woman play (approx. 45 minutes) that tells the story of a
cross-country train trip from Denver to Eugene, Oregon. In addition to sharing
vignettes of encounters she has with other travelers on the train, Andrea "departs" from the train in her mind and shares other stories that are thematically related as the journey goes along. Sometimes the work feels like poetry, and sometimes storytelling or theater.”
