Weekly WeatherAbiquiu River Front CasitaThis real adobe, Northern New Mexico farmhouse was built in 2009, as a home for an artist and a boat builder. It sits on 7 tranquil acres, next to the Rio Chama, so relax on the screened portal and enjoy the music of the river with all its wildlife to entertain you.
The Rio Chama is wonderful. In the winter, the water level is usually low, except after a big rainfall. Then in the summer, when they are transporting irrigation water, it can be full, fast, and impressive. About 100 feet wide, 4 feet deep, and faster than you can swim. Lu saw an osprey fly down, catch a fish, and fly back up into a tree with it. Old timers say this might be one of the best fly fishing spots on the river. Abiquiu has Ghost Ranch and Georgia O'Keefe tours. Café Sierra Negro (really good) is just 2 miles to the west on 84. Santa Fe, with its art galleries and fine New Mexico dining, is just 45 min south. For hiking to the south, cross 84 and there is huge BLM land to walk. Or just 3 miles to the northwest, you can hike the Plaza Blanca loop. Just walk up County Road 156, turn right at the end, down the hill, another right and back to where you started. Bring your horses. Sleeps up to 10 + as follows: 1 King bed in upstairs bedroom with lovely views including river. 1 Queen in the upstairs loft. 2 Queens in the downstairs bedroom. 1 Twin bed on the screen porch. Big window seat in living room. 1 double futon in the studio. Both bathrooms are accessible without going thru a bedroom. Super insulated for summer and winter. Radiant floor heat and NEW Minisplit Air Conditioning ! Starlink internet access It's your time !! Visit online and book your trip today Free Yourself from Worry
At retirement, there is often a fear of taking money out of savings to live. Whether it’s your IRA, or Profit Sharing Plan, or other retirement account; or even your savings, there’s a healthy fear of depleting them too soon. “Will I run out of money?” Is the biggest question I get, and have always gotten in my 40 plus years of advising people on their lives. You see, it used to be that companies offered pension plans for their employees fully paid for by the employer. Pension plans pay a guaranteed monthly income for your life. It’s like a paycheck, but in retirement. It was all done for you. Unfortunately most companies have done away with that type of plan, and replaced it with contribution type plans (i.e. 401k, 403b, etc.) where you contribute and they match. The responsibility has been shifted to you, the employee, or to you the small business owner. So when you retire you have your 401k plan balance, your IRA’s, your savings etc., which amount to money you can use toward your retirement income needs. This gets us right back to “the question”: do I have enough? How do we address the fear of running out of money too soon? I believe the answer to that is structuring a guaranteed income base to retire on. Sound familiar? It’s like what companies used to offer: a guaranteed monthly income. You can do it with part of your retirement savings, or with other savings… any money can be used to create your own “pension plan”. This is the start of any sound income plan in my view. You should have freedom in your retirement years from fear you’ll ever run out of money, because you won’t if you structure things properly. We can help you do that. Just as important, you should have the Freedom to pursue the areas of life that you are passionate about: your spirituality, your interests, your pursuit of becoming the person you were created to be. A secure monthly income gives you that freedom. That’s what “Thoughtful” is all about: securing one part of your life so you can live the others freely. It’s all about being free to realize your full potential. I’d love to help you do just that. Maybe you remember that I wrote an article about the Mosque near Plaza Blanca, built by the famous Egyptian architect Hassan Fathy. Fatima van Hattum who had kindly guided me around the compound of the Dar Al Islam educational center, which was built around the mosque, had mentioned that the board and the organization’s governance was going through some major changes. The plan was to have greater community involvement, to offer a space for Muslims and Non-Muslims, to re-vitalize the whole area, in fact. Read More

Just a week ago I gave a talk at a conservation center about mycelial networks delighted by the audience’s enthusiasm. There were so many questions after the talk that a one- hour presentation turned into two. It is also a relief to know that some people are genuinely interested in what goes on in the soil beneath our feet. Read More

Start Date: 6/6/2024 Location: 7 miles north of the village of Coyote, N.M. Personnel: 478 Containment: 0% Estimated Containment Date 06/18/2024 Fuels: Timber, litter, understory The Indios Fire is a lightning caused wildfire located in the Coyote Ranger District, about 7 miles north of the village of Coyote, N.M within the Chama River Canyon Wilderness. Incident objectives include protecting values at risk and meeting Santa Fe National Forest Plan objectives by reintroducing fire into a fire dependent ecosystem. Expected benefits include reduction of hazardous fuels, encouraging native growth, and improving range and watershed conditions, species diversity, and wildlife habitat. Fire crews are working to minimize adverse fire impacts to federal and private lands including watersheds, natural and cultural resources, range, and agricultural infrastructure, and preserving landscape characteristics in the Chama River Canyon Wilderness. Highlights: Completion has increased to 86% today as crews make more progress toward meeting the objectives for the Indios Fire. Suppression repair activities continue across the fire area, with a focus on the northwest side. The incident management team will provide another opportunity for the public to meet with fire managers and ask questions about the Indios Fire at an open house on Sunday, June 9, from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM in the lecture hall at the Coronado High School, 1903 NM-96, Gallina, NM. Santa Fe – Registration is now underway for The Food Depot’s largest fundraiser, the Neighbor to Neighbor Fund Drive. Groups across Northern New Mexico are invited to register, donate, and learn more about the fundraising competition at thefooddepot.org/n2n. Neighbor to Neighbor 2024 is presented by TechSource Inc.
All proceeds from the 13th annual fund drive will benefit The Food Depot, Northern New Mexico’s only food bank. In 2023, the community-wide fundraiser raised nearly $400,000 for hunger-relief efforts across The Food Depot’s nine-county service area. The goal for 2024 is to exceed $400,000. “Year after year, we are deeply moved by the extraordinary generosity of our community. The Neighbor to Neighbor Fund Drive has blossomed, delivering over a million meals last year alone. I am filled with hope and excitement for the incredible impact we will achieve together in 2024,” shared Jill Dixon, The Food Depot’s Executive Director-Elect. Neighbor to Neighbor began as a food drive in 2011 before transitioning to a fund drive during the pandemic. As a fund drive, all donations go directly to supporting The Food Depot’s innovative programs and network of partner agencies across Northern New Mexico. For every $1 donated during Neighbor to Neighbor, The Food Depot can provide up to four healthy meals. Starting June 3rd, neighborhoods, businesses, schools, and community groups can register online to participate in Neighbor to Neighbor. Until September 23rd, groups will raise funds for The Food Depot in a friendly competition. Winning teams in different categories will be announced in early October. Individuals are also welcome to participate by donating directly to The Food Depot’s hunger-relief efforts as “Friends of The Food Depot.” Thank you to 2024 Neighbor to Neighbor sponsors: Bell Rock Consulting LLC, Cafe Pasquals, Santa Fe By Design, and TechSource, Inc. The Food Depot is still accepting business sponsors to highlight during the fundraiser. To learn more about participating groups, register your own group, or donate, visit thefooddepot.org/n2n. Any questions about Neighbor to Neighbor should be directed to Lauren Bourguignon, Community Outreach Coordinator, at events@thefooddepot.org, or Mary Ferguson, Volunteer Organizer of Neighbor to Neighbor, at 949-235-2378. About The Food Depot The Food Depot is a nonprofit organization that aims to make healthy food accessible to every person in every community in New Mexico. As the food bank for nine northern counties, The Food Depot provides resources to over 40,000 New Mexicans across 26,000 square miles. Our innovative programs, resource navigation services, and advocacy work supports individuals in achieving food security. In 2023, The Food Depot’s unique programs, along with our 80 nonprofit partners, provided an average of 624,000 meals each month to those experiencing food insecurity. You are invited to join the food security movement by donating, volunteering, or advocating on their website, thefooddepot.org. The Food Depot operates as an equal opportunity provider. Casa Urraca Press has created a place for locals in our area to recommend books to each other, and a place to find book suggestions with a personal touch.
This week, Alyssa recommends M Train, by Patti Smith: "I think if you love Patti Smith and her music, this book will make you feel so much more connected to her as a person. But I don't think you need to even know her music for it to draw you in. It's dreamlike and haunting and so, so beautiful, talking about travels and heartbreak and music, and it has her photography throughout too. A book for artists and creatives, really, by an incredibly fearless one."

Pancake Breakfast Rain or Shine
El RIto Library
Sunday, June 9
The library is the place to be this Sunday between 9 am and Noon. It’s not your ordinary fundraising pancake breakfast, to be sure.
We’re showcasing blue corn pancakes made with a generous donation of blue corn flour from Owl Peak farm in La Madera. To mix it up a bit, there will be two other choices possible. A crepe offering can be rolled up like a taquito and sprinkled with powdered sugar. A more traditional sourdough pancake will be powered by a starter that has a long and tasty history. A hearty sampling of pancakes with sausages and fruit on the side accompanied by coffee or tea will all be a good start to whatever weekend activities you’ve planned. Show up, be present, meet your neighbors, make new friends and help our library keep going forward!
You needn’t bring an umbrella. In the event of rain, we’ll set up inside. Donations will go towards helping us afford our sudden major cost increase for the library’s property insurance.
