Over the years I’ve worked on quite a few people’s WiFi. Maybe you remember that I wrote an article about the Mosque near Plaza Blanca, built by the famous Egyptian architect Hassan Fathy. Fatima van Hattum who had kindly guided me around the compound of the Dar Al Islam educational center, which was built around the mosque, had mentioned that the board and the organization’s governance was going through some major changes. The plan was to have greater community involvement, to offer a space for Muslims and Non-Muslims, to re-vitalize the whole area, in fact. Read More

Just a week ago I gave a talk at a conservation center about mycelial networks delighted by the audience’s enthusiasm. There were so many questions after the talk that a one- hour presentation turned into two. It has been ten years since I taught at the University of Maine and Central Maine Community College, and I have forgotten how much I enjoy teaching. It is also a relief to know that some people are genuinely interested in what goes on in the soil beneath our feet. Read More

A proposal to aerially apply pesticides to kill native grasshoppers on federal public lands in the Rio Chama Watershed has sparked significant public outcry for the second year in a row. Juneteenth New Mexico State Director Willie Williams said: “The National Juneteenth Observance Foundation and Juneteenth New Mexico have been educating and celebrating the community with the Juneteenth Flag Raising Ceremony and Veterans Luncheon for the last four years. We'd like to see that too! For several years we've been publishing interviews with locals, new and old but we would love to hear from more of our long time area residents and have reached out to many to be interviewed. If you are or have a good subject for an interview, contact us

It has been recommended that a reservoir be built either in the canyon of the El Rito Creek, or in the canyon of Potrero Creek above the settlement. It is claimed by the older men of the community that enough floodwater every spring is wasted that could irrigate all the present farmlands, and also enable other land to be brought into cultivation. In the range land south of the village there are at least 5,000 acres of tillable land that could easily be watered if the reservoirs were made in the canyons above.

Casa Urraca Press has created a place for locals in our area to recommend books to each other, and a place to find book suggestions with a personal touch.
This week, Douglas recommends Open Throat, by Henry Hoke: "I have never read a book like this. It's super short but super real. Kind of changed my mind about what a book can do. It's about a mountain lion outside LA (or "ellay") who has lots of thoughts about the people who come hiking by his home near the Hollywood sign. I got weirdly emotionally invested. Actually not sure how much I liked it, but I keep thinking about it, so it did something interesting."

Have a book to recommend? Send it to Zach at casaurracaltd@gmail.com – title, author, and the reason you suggest it.

A purchase from Casa Urraca's link helps support independent bookstores.
Abiquiu’s Casa Urraca Press earns a commission from every shopping trip that starts with the above Bookshop link—you can shop the entire Bookshop site in addition to the locals' picks. Plus, a percentage of every book (at least 10%) goes straight to independent bookstores. This is an opportunity to support small businesses with the same convenience as large online retailers.

Lydia
Lydia was born and raised in the outdoors, fending for herself - it’s all she has known. With this hardscrabble life on the streets, she’s quite scared and unsure of people’s intentions. While she isn’t the cuddly purrball most are looking for, time and love will be nothing short of transformational, and getting that first purr from her will make you feel like you’ve just changed the world, at least the world as this kitten knows it. Lydia is a tiny two-months-old and is available to walk-in adopters from our shelter, and she goes home spayed, up to date on vaccines, and microchipped

Clifford is a pint-sized ball of cuddlebug love and good times - and speaking of “ball,” Clifford loves nothing more in life than a tennis ball or a little stuffie toy! This fetching boy is also house trained and great on leash, and he would make an excellent addition to an active family who enjoys lots of outdoor activities, followed by relaxing on the couch. This 2yo 47lb goodest boy goes home neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, and with six months of free heartworm prevention!
