Weekly WeatherIn Gratitude Viento del Rio Excavating and Viento del RioJeff and Tami moved to Abiquiu in 2020 after retiring from farming. When they purchased their 25 acre property on the Rio Chama they realized they both needed something to keep them busy. Jeff an excellent equipment operator after farming his whole life decided to start an excavation business. Jeff is fair, affordable gets the job done in a timely manner. Jeff can do most any project. One of the most pressing problems in our valley are the Russian Olive’s. They have gotten out of hand and threaten our beautiful cottonwoods, They require an average of 75 gallons of water a day and can grow 6 feet per year. If you look around you can see dying Cottonwood’s with Russian Olives crowding them. Jeff can either bring his excavator to pull them out by the roots or use skid steer to mow them.
Tami manages the hospitality side of the business. Viento del Rio Casita and Viento del Rio Campsite on the Rio Chama.
In Gratitude - Chama Valley ArtsChama Valley Arts cultivates creativity, learning, and community through arts and culture. Many of our programs take place at the Chama Valley Arts Center, 278 Maple Avenue in Chama. We also partner with both Chama Valley and Dulce Independent School Districts bringing arts enrichment and supporting teachers. We host youth and adult arts classes throughout the year and are hosting the 17th annual Chama Valley Art Festival and Studio Tour this Labor Day weekend.
Visit chamavalleyartfest.org for more information. We invite everyone to our inaugural Celebration and Auction at Log River Ranch on June 13th. Doors open at 5pm and the auction will begin at 6pm. We will be graced with live music by Miguel Duran and Ruben Hernandez, celebrate our many achievements, and enjoy delectable appetizers crafted by the up and coming local chef, Hannah Valenzuela. Please come support our work and get a chance to win original artworks in many media as well as several get-away packages, services, and excellent quality items. Now in our 5th year, we are excited to offer our first multi-disciplinary arts summer camp series for school age youth, on 6/24-6/27 and 7/15-7/18. The camps are offered on a sliding scale, with scholarships available so no one will be turned away, and drop-ins will be accepted if families can’t attend the whole camp. Activities include tumbling, dance, music, visual arts, ceramics, leatherwork, and a field trip to the Cumbres and Toltec Railroad. Our work is always grounded in connection, support, and gratitude. We continue to grow and serve our community through the generous help and support of dozens of individuals and organizations. We are also open to community input: if you are interested in sharing skills at the Art Center please reach out to us through our website chamavalleyarts.org Thank you Contributors and Paid SubscribersAns Z and Ton H

For the last three nights I have been awakened by a bird singing at around 3AM. The first and second nights I heard three short cheeps and a strange buzzing call. These calls were repeated a number of times. Last night the bird that I heard made three soft calls a number of times. No buzzing. Mystified by the night song occurring just outside my window I finally did a bit of research on the sounds of birds made by the nightjar family because, although these calls were different, I am familiar with the species in general – especially the whippoorwill. Start Date: 5/25/2024 Location: 7 miles north of the village of Coyote, N.M. Personnel: 697 Containment: 0% Fuels: Timber, litter, understory Operations: Cloud cover and high humidity moderated fire behavior and restricted fire movement to a short burn window late yesterday afternoon. Fire crews along the western side of the fire completed mastication and handline work on Forest Road 8 well ahead of schedule and began working on contingency planning further west. The east side of the fire along Forest Road 468 is holding well, freeing up some crews to assist in other areas. Around a private ranch southwest of the fire, crews constructed fireline using dozers to the west and built handline and laid hoses to the east. Swing shifts have been brought on to complement day crews, allowing fire management activities to continue late into the evening. Another 10,000-gallon water tank was placed, and aerial water support helped to aid ground activities. Overall, fire crews have been working expediently, accomplishing one week’s work in three days. Today, fire crews will continue this work as drier conditions move in. Structure protection crews will work along the southern edge of the confinement area to assess private property needs. External organizations, such as the Youth Conservation Corps, New Mexico Department of Transportation, and Coronado High School, are providing vital support to the incident management team. Weather: Thunderstorm activity in southern Colorado, along with dry air from the west, should result in cloud buildup today. Temperatures should be similar to yesterday, and winds will continue to move down the canyons throughout the day and become westerly in the afternoon; however, air should be drier today than yesterday. Smoke: Smoke from the Indios Fire is visible from surrounding communities. Smoke-sensitive individuals and people with respiratory problems or heart disease are encouraged to take precautionary measures. Learn more about smoke impacts on the New Mexico Environment Department website at https://www.env.nm.gov/air-quality/fire-smoke-links/. View an interactive smoke map at https://fire.airnow.gov/. Closures: The Santa Fe National Forest has issued an emergency area closure for the Indios Fire. The purpose of the closure order is to protect public health and safety and the safety of all personnel working on the fire. The full closure order (No. 03-12-05-23-22) and map are available on Inciweb. Camping and water will be available at the Coyote Ranger Station for Continental Divide Trail hikers impacted by this closure. Safety: A temporary flight restriction (TFR) is in place over the area, which includes uncrewed aircraft systems or drones. More information on the dangers drones pose to wildland firefighting aircraft and personnel on the ground can be found at: https://uas.nifc.gov/. More Information: inciweb.wildfire.gov/incident-information/nmsnf-indios-wildfire / The Continental Divide Trail (CDT) is closed from Skull Bridge to the Highway 96 crossing. Please use alternate routes. Please drive slowly and watch for fire personnel on FRs 8, 11, and 169E and avoid them if possible. Evacuations: There are currently no evacuations.

The flows at La Puente have fallen to 600 CFS. The cool weather has managed to slow the snowmelt a bit and I think we can now expect to start making cuts during the third week of June.
The flows at La Puente today are similar to the 2021 flows on this date. In 2021 we reached 100 CFS on June 20 and 70 CFS on June 23. The Atlantic hurricane season prediction is very high, so we can expect there to be lots of moisture in the atmosphere. Hopefully that presages a strong monsoon season for us. Casa Urraca Press has created a place for locals in our area to recommend books to each other, and a place to find book suggestions with a personal touch.
This week, Max recommends The Boys in the Boat, by Daniel James Brown: "Saw the movie, it was okay, but it got me curious because I love history. This book was so much better than the movie. Inspiring underdog story. Great history. Also good for summertime, now that we're getting back on the lake. If you like sports or sports stories and history, definitely a good book for you to read."
|
Have a book to recommend? Send it to Zach at casaurracaltd@gmail.com – title, author, and the reason you suggest it.
The full Locals’ Picks list is available to view here on Bookshop.
A purchase from Casa Urraca's link helps support independent bookstores.
Abiquiu’s Casa Urraca Press earns a commission from every shopping trip that starts with the above Bookshop link—you can shop the entire Bookshop site in addition to the locals' picks. Plus, a percentage of every book (at least 10%) goes straight to independent bookstores. This is an opportunity to support small businesses with the same convenience as large online retailers.

The Long Way Round: Performance Poetry & Storytelling with Andrea Moore
Andrea performs a one-woman play (approx. 45 minutes) that tells the story of a
cross-country train trip from Denver to Eugene, Oregon. In addition to sharing
vignettes of encounters she has with other travelers on the train, Andrea "departs" from the train in her mind and shares other stories that are thematically related as the journey goes along. Sometimes the work feels like poetry, and sometimes storytelling or theater.”

Rio Arriba County depends on groundwater for everyday uses such as drinking, bathing, washing clothes and cleaning. This is true whether we have a domestic well or are connected to a mutual domestic system. Groundwater is a vital community resource, yet we have very little understanding of how much we have or what the quality of this water is.
The Rio Arriba Groundwater Study aims to address key questions about our groundwater aquifers:
▪ What do these aquifers look like?
▪ How much water do they hold?
▪ What is the quality of this water?
▪ Is groundwater being replenished (recharged)?
The New Mexico Bureau of Geology and Mineral Resources, Aquifer Mapping Program, has been conducting a study of the aquifers in Rio Arriba County. Public meetings to discuss the initial results of the study will be held on the following dates and times.
Chama Valley
Monday June 03, 2024 5:00-7:00pm at the Village of Chama

Tuesday June 04, 2024 5:00-7:00pm at the NMSU Extension Office at the Rural Events Center
Dixon and Embudo
Wednesday June 05, 2024 5:00-7:00pm at the Embudo Valley Library
The final report will be published in July 2024 and will be available at the New Mexico Bureau of Geology website at geoinfo.nmt.edu.
Thank you to everyone who volunteered their wells for this study!

Athena is wise beyond her three years earthside. Upon arrival, she shook uncontrollably in her kennel, but she's quickly opened up and shown us what a goofy pup she can be. She's great on leash and has medium energy - the perfect combo for neighborhood strolls followed by cuddles on the couch! Beautiful and wildly affectionate, Athena is ready to go home with someone who will treat her like the goddess (doggess?) she is.
