Weekly WeatherIn GratitudeWe thank Dr Bessie Babits and Willow Creek Stallions as our newest sponsor
And for all things created within me, it is the soul of the horse that ignites all that is born from Divine Inspiration.
My Horses. My Heart. My Soul. My Life. Me. We. This is the essence of who I, Dr. Elizabeth (Bessie) Babits, BVSc, DVM, am in the unity with the horse. Bienvenidos to Willow Creek Stud (WCS) and The Academy of Equestrian Arts (TAEA), located at the base of sacred Cerro Pedernal. Dr. Bessie has a rare combination of qualities, being both a practicing equine veterinarian as well as a life-long trainer of horses. “I have been as much a student of the horse as well as a teacher to the horse. Although I have been molded by classical dressage masters, in both French classical work and in the traditional Spanish equestrian arts (alta escuela, doma vaquera, y la garrocha), much of my knowledge and work with horses has come from observing, listening to, and learning from the horse. Bessie's life is devoted completely to the horse. Her mission is to create artistic brilliance and expression by transcending the earthly bound realms of connection and communication with the horse through classical riding. Her goal is to help horses and riders develop connection, communication, trust, rapport, and oneness without resistance. That mission involves continuing the time-honored teachings of classical dressage and academic equitation melded with modern equine veterinary knowledge. WCS stands 11 top PRE stallions. The AEA offers training (starting young horses, work in hand, long reins, doma vaquera, classical dressage), lessons, clinics, workshops, boarding, and rehabilitation. Dr. Bessie is an equine veterinarian with over 20 years experience and enjoys lameness, performance horse medicine, podiatry (corrective and specialty trimming), reproduction, dentistry, education of clients, and geriatric medicine. Dogs and humans evolved together. We learned, genetically speaking, to complement each other and share a deeply meaningful symbiosis, as well as food. Never is this relationship more apparent in my house than during lizard season. Read More

I’ve written about Starlink before. I think it’s the best way to get internet in our area, and likely in most remote areas. Directly around here, a T-Mobile hotspot makes sense if you can access the tower by the rural events center. Read More

Isn’t it glorious to live close by a beautiful river? If you grew up here and lived here all your life, the Chama River sustained and nurtured you and for someone like me, who lived in big cities for most of her life, the river was a blessing and a friend. I love everything about it, the different sounds it makes, the various shades of blue and brown and grey, all the different critters one meets when one sits close by for a while and silently watches. I never knew there were so many different kinds of ducks! Buffleheads, mergansers, various teals, mallards, shovelers – they often came by, with cute babies in tow.

If there’s one thing that defines being New Mexican in the United States, it might well be this: We know we are special, while at the same time we feel indescribably inferior to other places. Maybe it’s because we’re not widely known as superlatively anything, or big-league in any way but the nuclear ones. Read more

I hesitate to call this an article about security cameras because we use our cameras more to watch the wildlife around our house. We have a camera devoted to what’s under our porch, for instance. Generally, we have a couple of cats under there, but often there are raccoons too. Sometimes a squirrel, mouse, bird, and once, a dog. Read More
Maybe you remember that I wrote an article about the Mosque near Plaza Blanca, built by the famous Egyptian architect Hassan Fathy. Fatima van Hattum who had kindly guided me around the compound of the Dar Al Islam educational center, which was built around the mosque, had mentioned that the board and the organization’s governance was going through some major changes. The plan was to have greater community involvement, to offer a space for Muslims and Non-Muslims, to re-vitalize the whole area, in fact. Read More

Work Begins to Return Chama River to its ChannelChris Torres, Manager for the Socorro Field Division of the Bureau of Reclamation will be managing the effort for the plug.
I was up there Tuesday and was able to survey the plug. I have equipment mobilizing as I write. We will have a dozer coming in today (Wednesday) followed by two heavy excavators tomorrow. The crew will immediately get to work cutting a channel through the plug and getting that water back in it channel. They will be working extended hours until that plug is clear. Mike Hamman, State Engineer, has been tremendously helpful to RCAA and he is doing everything within his power to help make this happen. RCAA is grateful for all the positive responses which have been received from all the government agencies for their offers of assistance. At this time, I ask mayordomos in the affected area to be patient while this work proceeds. I will continue to keep everyone updated as we move forward. The County just declared an emergency disaster this week. It is waiting to be signed.
From Rio de Chama Acequia Association USACE will keep the outflow at 100cfs until further notice. Also, MRGCD was notified that they will not be able to deliver their water from Heron reservoir until the river is repaired. So this is affecting all our downstream neighbors as well. Bottom line, we will get through this as a community. This disaster highlighted the importance of rehabilitating our watersheds along the entire lower Rio Chama to prevent disasters like this from happening again. It also highlighted the importance of improving our overall infrastructure along the lower Rio Chama. Attached is an acequia guide to disaster funding. Paula Garcia, executive director of NMAA and her staff put this together based on their experience with the Hermit's Peak/Calf Canyon Fire in the Mora area. Also attached is a map of our affected area. I will continue to provide weekly updates as we move forward. Several people mentioned formatting and scrolling down or moving the events up. As the news grew and we had more articles it was getting unwieldly. We created links to the articles on the home page that will take you to features, news, bloom blog and tech tips that reside on other pages, allowing you, the reader, to choose what you want to read or get down to events that much quicker. In addition, in this news we have added links at the top that will take you directly to Events and Announcements. About those ads! We have requested from all our contributors that ads should be in the horizontal format to ease those scrolling woes, and that we will keep them in for three weeks. This week, Zach recommends Last Words: Essays, by Margaret Randall: "A new release from Abiquiú's Casa Urraca Press. Margaret is a prolific writer, a social activist, a prominent feminist, and a deep thinker. Here, in these new essays, she ponders the meanings and impacts of art, the political trajectories of the United States and the world, and the power of our most lasting words. I doubt these will be Margaret's last words, though she does manage to have the last word on many meaningful topics. Available now on the Casa Urraca Press bookstore, as well as our Bookshop.org page."
