While traditional raku colors are usually subdued, earthy or metallic, Amber’s are unusually bright and bold, reflecting vivid contrasts of the southwestern landscape she loves. The crackled surface of the pieces lends an appearance of age to contemporary forms. Amber’s pieces are hand-thrown and Raku-fired. Dimensions may vary slightly. The Raku process submits ware to extreme temperature shock giving it the crackled appearance and making it unsuitable for long term liquid or acidic food storage. It should be HAND washed. They are food safe. Her studio is open by appointment only, via email. Visit Expressions in Clay online. Thank you Contributors and Paid SubscribersStuart F

Georgia O’Keeffe Museum Art & Leadership Program Now Accepting Applications March 21, 2023The Program has Opened Enrollment to Rising Sixth Grade Students in Santa Fe and Surrounding Areas
The Georgia O’Keeffe Museum is pleased to announce applications to the O’Keeffe Art & Leadership Program are open to all rising sixth grade students in Santa Fe and its surrounding communities. Students at private, charter, and BIE schools, as well as homeschooled children from across Northern New Mexico are encouraged to apply for the summer program. Now in its 25th year, the O’Keeffe Art & Leadership Program is free for participants, who are also provided daily breakfast, lunch, and snacks. Students attend a two-week session Monday through Friday, from 9:00 AM- 5:00 PM, with a celebratory Art Show held in the first week of August. “We are thrilled to expand access to the Art & Leadership Program to the Northern New Mexico area,” said Grace Almanza, School and Tour Programs Manager for the Museum, as previously, attendees were nominated by teachers and educators in Santa Fe. “Summers at the Museum buzz with excitement from the students creating and exploring their imaginations in the different spaces on campus. We are excited for students from across our community to join us.”
Created as a homage to Georgia O’Keeffe’s lifelong passion for education and learning, the Art & Leadership program is a three-year summer program that begins in the summer after fifth grade. Students are then invited back to participate in the Art & Leadership Program every summer until they graduate eighth grade. The program was created to target middle school youth and address the gap in artistic development between elementary and high school. Participants learn collectively with a focus on independent thinking, building self-esteem, and strengthening self-respect. Museum staff, program leaders, interns, and teaching artists lead the program, offering children an oasis of positive support and encouragement. Special opportunities for those attending include touring Ghost Ranch and the O’Keeffe Home & Studio in Abiquiú, showing at the end-of-summer Art Show, and being published in the A&L Zine, the Program’s magazine which is worked on throughout the summer. Applications are now available on the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum website for rising sixth-graders to complete. The deadline for applications is May 1. Questions about the Art & Leadership program can be sent to ALinfo@gokm.org. The Art & Leadership Program is generously funded by Century Bank, Kappa Delta Foundation, Sheila Fortune Foundation, New Mexico Arts, a division of the Department of Cultural Affairs, and by the National Endowment for the Arts. ABOUT THE GEORGIA O’KEEFFE MUSEUM: Since 1997, the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum celebrates the art, life, and independent spirit of Georgia O’Keeffe. Located in Santa Fe, New Mexico, where Georgia O’Keeffe lived the final decades of her life. The O’Keeffe has sites and experiences in two historic destinations, Santa Fe and Abiquiú. For more information, please visit gokm.org One of the patients that came to our hospital last week is a member of a species that has not been admitted to NMWC since 2018: meet Northern Saw-whet Owl 24-40! While 24-40's species was a bit surprising for us to see, the reason he was admitted is a very common one for owls and other raptors: 24-40 was hit by a car.
24-40 was, however, relatively lucky: he hit the windshield of a vehicle that was traveling slowly, which reduced the severity of his injuries. After the collision, the driver immediately stopped the car to rescue the tiny owl from the road, kept him in a dark and quiet place overnight, then brought him to NMWC the next morning. Careful driving and quick intervention probably helped to give 24-40 an encouraging prognosis! The owl has some bruising on the back of one eye and a mild concussion, but so far he is recovering well. Vehicle collisions are a common cause of injury for a lot of raptor species and other wildlife. Often, small animals like mice and rats are attracted to discarded food and trash that accumulates on roadsides when people toss things out of car windows. An apple core or piece of bread that gets thrown onto the side of the road might be biodegradable, but it probably won't even have a chance to be broken down before some small animal comes along to snack on it. However, the presence of prey animals close to roads also attracts predators, who are more likely to fly or run into the path of oncoming traffic. One way to protect all wildlife, especially birds of prey, other predators, and scavengers, is to keep roadsides clean and make sure trash finds its way into a trash can or compost bin! Send your local bird sightings. Email
