In GratitudeWe are grateful to the Abiquiu Arts Council for renewing their sponsorship. It looks like a glorious fall weekend in Abiquiu. Take the tour this year and help celebrate the 30th Abiquiu Studio Tour!
Abiquiú Arts Council: Celebrating Art, Community, and the 30th Annual Abiquiú Studio TourAt the Abiquiú Arts Council, we believe in the power of art to connect, inspire, and uplift our community. For years, we’ve proudly supported local artists, ensuring that the rich creative spirit of Abiquiú is accessible to all. Through our programming, we aim to foster a vibrant art scene, offering opportunities for artists to showcase their talents and for the public to experience the beauty that grows from the land and culture of this special place.
As a nonprofit, we rely on the generosity of our sponsors and donors to make this possible. Your support allows us to bring events like the Abiquiú Studio Tour to life, which, as many know, is our biggest event of the year. Now in its 30th year, the Studio Tour will take place on October 12 & 13 from 10am-5pm, providing a rare opportunity to explore the creative spaces of almost 60 local artists. From painters and sculptors to ceramicists and jewelers, there is something everyone can enjoy. We invite you to come out and experience the magic for yourself. Wander the breathtaking landscapes of Abiquiú, meet the talented artists, and take home a one-of-a-kind treasure. Your participation not only celebrates the arts but also helps us continue our mission of supporting artists and enriching the cultural fabric of our community. We look forward to seeing you at this year’s tour and thank you for being part of the Abiquiú Arts Council family. There are few creatures I find more fascinating than bees living in a colony. A large community of beings that act almost like a single organism: each individual member of the collective acts to further the wellbeing of the whole. Doesn’t this sound like something we humans should emulate a little? Read More

I can think of no human creation as ungodly as the waiting room.
And yes, I considered the iron maiden, but I ruled it out because, in one of those, you at least know with certainty you’re not going anywhere. The Fed Has Finally Cut Interest Rates—Now What?
For over two years, investors have been enjoying over 5% returns on their Money Market funds. It’s been like the financial version of a never-ending happy hour—easy access to cash and decent income. But, like all good things, this party is winding down now that the Fed has cut, and will continue to cut, interest rates. So, where does all that money go next? Read More

When you think of books and art, you might think of Nobel-prize winning authors such as John Steinbeck or Thomas Mann, or of books of poetry where every word is carefully crafted and positioned. But one rarely thinks of the physical book itself – the paper, or the way the words are printed. Not so for long-time Abiquiú resident Pam Smith: she belongs to a relatively small group of people who dedicate their art to the way the book looks. Everything is done by hand: the printing, the binding, even the paper. Read More

Leonard was a devoted teacher and worked for several schools within Rio Arriba County. He touched the lives of his students and truly made an impact. Anyone that knew Leonard knew that he had a passion for helping others by sharing his life experiences and knowledge. Following his career in education, he worked security for the Georgia O’Keeffe Foundation for 10 years.
Leonard was a free spirit and enjoyed an unconventional life. He enjoyed listening to Rock n Roll and loved Pink Floyd. His favorite television shows were MASH, Hogan’s Heroes and Mission Impossible. He also enjoyed riding motorcycles, hunting arrow heads and spending time with his daughter, Anastasia. He was an avid animal lover and especially his cats that he loved so dearly. He was a loving father, grandfather, brother and uncle. His favorite thing to do was to facetime with his only granddaughter, Piper Jo. She was the apple of his eye. Leonard was preceded in death by his parents, Bennie and Joe, cousins Augustine and Merlinda Garcia whom he had a special bond with, as well as his sister-in-law Arla Ferran. He is survived by his daughter Anastasia Ferran, granddaughter Piper Jo Gillam-Ferran, brother Gilbert (Roberta) Ferran, two nieces Rebecca Cottone (Mike) and Megan Horn-Molett(Mitchell), and several great nieces and nephews. Memorial services will be announced at a later date. The family of Leonard Ferran has entrusted the care of their loved one to the DeVargas Funeral Home and Crematory of the Española Valley 505-747-7477 www.devargasfuneral.com Join Us in Supporting a Heartfelt FarewellJoePaul Garcia passed away suddenly on October 3, 2024. JoePaul was the son of Leopoldo Garcia and grandson of Napoleon Garcia, long-time residents of Abiquiu. JoePaul ran a modern day "Dad-Cab", always available to provide transportation for his four children to their games, appointments and jobs. JoePaul was always a willing handyman in the community with his skills of landscaping and construction. He was truly the backbone of his family and much loved by his wife, four children and his siblings. His gentle nature was evident in his love of his many animals.
The family is unprepared for the funeral costs and would appreciate any amount that can be donated. Donate Pueblo de Abiquiu LibraryScene Around TownSend us your local images. Send to AbiquiuNewsImages@gmail.com Please send images under 1mb. My inbox will thank you. ~Carol
