Shortened hours for Thanksgiving Week
Deadline for 11/29 Abiquiu News is Tuesday noon 11/26
In Gratitude - Nest GalleryI want to thank my supportive community. My neighbors are my family and everyone who visits Nest, a kindred spirit. I am honored to know you.
Now, more than ever, a local brick and mortar ( or, adobe and tin) shop is a necessary haven in this cyber heavy world. I strive to provide a place of discovery, a new scent or a real life tactile experience of a beautifully crafted object. My personal work for over 30 years of my life has to do with a love and study of gemstones as well as the craft of precious jewelry. I create pieces that hopefully hold significance to the wearer, whether it be a sacred plant, a meaningful gemstone, or a poem etched into metal that reminds the wearer of deep and evergreen Truths. Each piece is made with my highest intention. Nest includes the work of artists whose work I admire and that I feel brings heart into our work and living spaces. A hand crafted piece by a skilled maker has and gives a special resonance. A steamer by Dick Lumaghi blesses your carrots and tea when sipped by a Logan Wannamaker pinch cup is a delight for your hand as well as your tastebuds. Small business Saturday is coming up, and I appreciate you keeping my lovingly curated gallery in mind to give gifts that I feel are of the highest quality, and are the exact opposite of mass produced. This year we added the most stunning local fresh flowers every weekend grown by Ojo Caliente's Tumbleweed Farm and we will continue to do so in 2025. If the star's align, you can make an appointment on Sundays for a Tarot Card or Astrological Chart reading by Abiquiu's Oro Lynn Benson. We are also having our annual Christmas Poetry reading by VB Price who will read from his new book Orpheus The Healer as well as his Christmas Poems. We will make gourmet grown up s'mores and gather around a Holiday bonfire coming up on Saturday December 7th from 3-5pm. If it's been a while since you have visited, we are always evolving, and it's the perfect time to visit us again. We are open through December 31st every Wednesday-Saturday from 10am-5pm mountain time and Sundays from 12-5 excluding Thanksgiving and Christmas Day. May the light of the season shine from our hearts. Warmest, Tamara Kay www.abiquiunest.com Thank you Contributors and Paid SubscribersJohn F

A permit was issued November 20th for a critical river restoration project. Work will be commencing in the lower Rio Chama near Medanales to address the severe reduction in channel capacity caused by the June 2024 flood and subsequent monsoon events. The project, undertaken by the NM Interstate Stream Commission aims to restore the river’s ability to handle significant water flows and mitigate future flood risks. This work is a continuation of the emergency response to the June 20, 2024, flood event and subsequent precipitation events that left significant amounts of sediment in the lower Rio Chama near Medanales. Hispanic, Latino, Chicano, Mexican American, Hispano, Nuevomexicano — what are we?

If you want to feel young, get a dog. But if you want to feel old, get a puppy.
Until we adopted a total stranger into our home, Hawkeye and I both appeared rather sprightly for our ages. He was nine and swam the equivalent of the English Channel that year while chasing tennis balls. I, meanwhile, was as close to 40 as I had ever been, but I did work out twice that summer and cut out sugar for an entire meal. Read More
It’s been a while since I wrote any Mac tips. So many folks have given up their Mac computers and switched to iPads and iPhones, I wonder how valuable the tips are. I still use my desktop though, so maybe a few people are interested. Read More

Lisa Faithorn and her husband Djann Hoffman had a vision when they moved to Medanales: they wanted to create a community-focused space which would foster environmental stewardship, local engagement, and artistic expression. In 2006, they bought a 20-acre farm by the Chama River, “long and narrow, like most of the farms around here”, Djann told me when I visited them. “We have an acequia that runs right across the middle, a very old ditch from the 1600s. But we didn't really know we were going to bring the farm back to life when we moved here!” Read More

Ignitions begin Tuesday November 19 on the Lino Pile Burn unit in Coyote Ranger District
On Tuesday, November 19, fire managers from the Coyote Ranger District will begin ignitions on the 99-acre Lino Pile Burn unit. The project is located adjacent to Forest Road 461KA, a spur road off Forest Road 103, south of New Mexico State Road 96. Fire managers are planning one day of ignitions and smoke may be visible from communities along New Mexico State Road 96 including Coyote, Cañones, and Gallina. Over the coming months, fire managers will continue to look for ideal weather conditions to conduct pile burn projects throughout the forest. The decision to proceed with each pile burn will depend on several factors, including snowpack, air quality, ventilation, forecast weather conditions, wind, and resource availability. Once pile burn projects are completed, resources will shift towards patrolling and monitoring these units. Fire crews will utilize infrared detection devices, such as handheld thermal cameras and Uncrewed Aerial Systems (fixed-wing or drones), to assist in determining when to call the pile burns out. This week, Laurel recommends Wolfish, by Erica Berry: "Big time recommend this book. Not just if you love wolves. It's actually about humans and how we can better exist in a world where being human, especially being a woman, means learning how to be afraid and what to do with that. Great storytelling and science and always interesting."

Mia
Mia the Meatball’s idea of rodent control is watching a mouse from the couch and hoping it trips. Mia is a particularly plump purrbaby! Her jelly belly muffin top actually dragged on the ground when she arrived, but with careful calorie restriction and a high fiber diet, she is slowly starting to shrink the chunk trunk. While her feline fanny-pack doesn’t touch the floor anymore, she’s still having a hard time grooming herself, which is upsetting for fastidious floofs, and her weight loss journey will need to continue, one paw in front of the other. “Progress,” we tell her, “not perfection.”
Seven-year-old Mia is a sweet and easygoing girl who gets along famously with others - feline and canine! She embodies a Buddha-like calm and she would make a wonderful companion for anyone willing to give her the TLC and daily wellness affirmations she deserves! We are open to walk-in adopters Monday-Saturday 11am-4:30pm.

Frida
Our hearts have melted while witnessing Frida’s epic transformation from fearful to frolicsome. When Frida first arrived, this marshmallow moonbeam wasn’t sure that people had good intentions. With some patience and sweet talking - and some cheese - Frida has had a personality glow-up! This once-skittish sweetheart is now a certified wiggle worm. Her tail wags like a windshield wiper in a monsoon, and she greets everyone with playful pounces and a smile that makes everyone stop what they’re doing and reciprocate with their own smile. Frida loves to fetch & frolic in the play yard, and she’s also discovered the joy of zoomies. From cowering to cuddling, she’s blossomed into the playful pup she was always meant to be. Frida is 11 months old and a fun-size 48lbs; she goes home spayed, vaccinated, microchipped and with six months of free heartworm prevention. We are open to walk-in adopters Monday-Saturday 11am-4:30pm!
