We are honor to participate in the 4th Annual New Mexico Local News Matching campaign. Each newsroom will receive up to $7,500, in a dollar-for-dollar match for donations received between December 1st and December 31st. Learn more about NM Local news and the newsrooms they support.
Local news is in a crisis around the country, and in New Mexico in particular. New Mexico has 4 counties with no newspapers and 22 counties with only one newspaper, according to “news deserts” research at the University of North Carolina. When communities lack trusted news sources, they are less civically engaged, which is a threat to democracy. You’ve told us this year
At the Abiquiu News our goal is to build community and provide relevant information. Each week we bring stories about our community, reports on local issues, from floods, fires to a lost dog or two. Your paid subscriptions and contributions support that work. 100% of the money raised will go towards providing local reporting and website expenses. Click on Subscribe or Donate contribute online or send a check to Abiquiu News, PO Box 1052, Abiquiu NM 87510

One thing I particularly like about interviewing people is the fact that I learn so much about individuals I’ve known for a long time. Jaye Buros is a case in point; I first met her shortly after I moved to Abiquiú in 2000 and have run into her countless times thereafter. I knew she was a painter, that she was married to Bill Page, and that the two of them were running the Rising Moon Gallery for several years. But I had no idea that she was a TWA flight attendant for a while, or better: a stewardess, as they were called then. Read More

Thanksgiving is the one pure North American holiday, free of politics of commercialism of historical accuracy. Most people like to celebrate the warm-and-fuzzy animal sacrifice side of Thanksgiving. And that’s fine; America is nothing if not a nation of moderation, so we should be allowed one single meal of overindulgence each year. Read More

One of the best things about our traditional American Thanksgiving dinner is the choice of leftovers and the creative uses to which such leftovers can be put. Thanksgiving evening, shortly after we think, “I can’t eat another thing,” we may find ourselves heading to the kitchen and opening the fridge to see what would make a quick snack. For me, that is usually a leftover biscuit split in half, dabbed with mayo, and filled with a small piece of cold turkey and topped with a spoonful of cranberry sauce. Read More

LaylaLayla is a beautiful 2-year-old short-haired tabby with a heart full of potential. Once a spirited outdoor cat, she would sprint away at the sight of her handlers, reveling in her freedom. However, everything changed when her caregivers found her lying down one day, seemingly unwell and in need of help. Concerned for her well-being, they brought Layla to Española Humane where she could receive the care she so desperately needed. Upon arrival, Layla faced some health challenges, including a severe upper respiratory infection and a stubborn blade of grass lodged in her nose. It took her a few days to recover and start feeling comfortable in her new environment. Although she is still a bit nervous and doesn't actively seek out human interaction, Layla is expected to blossom into the affectionate companion she was meant to be. We are open to walk-in adopters Monday-Saturday 11am-4:30pm and closed on Thanksgiving!
