We are honored to participate in the 4th Annual New Mexico Local News Matching campaign. Each newsroom will receive up to $7,500 in a dollar-for-dollar match for donations received between December 1st and December 31st. Learn more about NM Local news and the newsrooms they support.
Local news is in a crisis around the country, and in New Mexico in particular. New Mexico has 4 counties with no newspapers and 22 counties with only one newspaper, according to “news deserts” research at the University of North Carolina. When communities lack trusted news sources they are less civically engaged which is a threat to democracy. The Abiquiu News provide a vehicle to share information in our rural communities with the aim to connecting us in an area underserved by other media sources. You’ve told us this year
At the Abiquiu News our goal is to build community and provide relevant information. Each week we bring stories about our community, reports on local issues, from floods, fires to a lost dog or two. Your paid subscriptions and contributions support that work. 100% of the money raised will go towards providing local reporting and website expenses. Click on Subscribe or Donate contribute online or send a check to Abiquiu News, PO Box 1052, Abiquiu NM 87510
Thank you Contributors and Paid Subscribers

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved father, John C. Demarest, of Abiquiu, New Mexico. Born on May 28, 1949, in Columbus, Ohio, he joined our mother, Rae, in heaven on November 27, 2024, at the age of 75.
John proudly served his country as an Aircraft Mechanic in the US Navy during the Vietnam conflict. He later built a distinguished career as a Firefighter in Denver, Colorado. A true outdoorsman, John found joy in fishing, hunting, camping, and riding through the mountains. John wished to be remembered as a devoted husband who cared for his wife until her passing, as well as a loving father, brother, son, friend, and most importantly, grandfather (“Papa”). His grandchildren were the light of his life, and he took immense pride in each of them. John is survived by his two daughters and their husbands, Michele Wolf (Dennis Duranceaux) of Albuquerque, NM, and Dawna Stine (Brian Stine) of Abiquiu, NM. He also leaves behind four cherished grandchildren: Evan Archer (fiancée Raney Beckham-Talbert) of Fort Worth, TX, Ashlynn Archer of Denver, CO, Peyton Elder of Seattle, WA, and Austin Sawyer of Centennial, CO. Additionally, he is survived by his sister, Linda Laitner of Rio Rancho, NM. John's love, wisdom, and humor have left an indelible mark on all who knew him. His memory will be cherished by all who loved him. A service will be held at the Veteran’s Memorial Cemetery in Santa Fe at a later date. Diana Miller - Celebrations of Life

The Locals’ Picks Book List
Zach Hively Casa Urraca Press has created a place for locals in our area to recommend books to each other, and a place to find book suggestions with a personal touch.
Have a book to recommend? Send it to Zach at casaurracaltd@gmail.com – title, author, and the reason you suggest it.
The full Locals’ Picks list is available to view here on Bookshop. A purchase from Casa Urraca's link helps support independent bookstores. Abiquiu’s Casa Urraca Press earns a commission from every shopping trip that starts with the above Bookshop link—you can shop the entire Bookshop site in addition to the locals' picks. Plus, a percentage of every book (at least 10%) goes straight to independent bookstores. This is an opportunity to support small businesses with the same convenience as large online retailers. She’s had some bad luck - Xena was actually adopted, and but sadly returned by her heartbroken adopter because she was returning home to the UK, and was informed Xena would not be able to go with her due to the UK and Wales bully breed ban, which includes anything that could be mixed with a bully breed. Xena was then placed in foster care, when she unfortunately broke every bone her paw after she leapt in fear from a big boom of thunder. Now, after months of healing, this love warrior is ready for adoption!
Xena is as gorgeous as she is sweet and cuddly, she loves other dogs, and now she just really needs someone to love her. Xena is spayed, vaccinated, microchipped, her adoption fee is WAIVED, and she even goes home with six months of free heartworm prevention! Apply on our website and we can schedule a meet-up with her adoring foster family.
