New Mexico has the highest percentage of residents on Medicaid in the U.S.

Community, noun. From Latin commūnitās, [f.], 1. A community, 2. Public spirit, a sense of duty, and willingness to serve one’s community.
Maybe you think that I sound like a broken record, but I have to say this again: there are so many community-conscious people in Abiquiú! Instead of striving to become rich and famous, they use their energy and skills to help other individuals and families, and they do this voluntarily. They build up and support a sense of belonging, trust, and care among like minded individuals, and they imbue a feeling of empowerment: when people work together, they get stuff done and can change things. Readers often ask me how I manage to write something new every week. The answer is simple: I live in terror.
(Terror of what? Of being a letdown, not following through, discovering that no one actually cares when I skip a week? Hey, give us a break. We here at this fine publication haven’t dug that deep. There’s no time for digging into our core selves when we’re always on deadline.) Read More
My second garden design project in the 'badland' foothills of Abiquiu, NM is my own place. The landscape around me is dry, fragile, and ruggedly picturesque, and I have a great view of the Chama River corridor just a 1/2 mile away. I often take note of the dramatic shift in vegetation from Rio Grande cottonwood and willows along the riverbank to the sparse pinon juniper scrubland beginning just 200' beyond. Read More

The Locals’ Picks Book List
Zach Hively Casa Urraca Press has created a place for locals in our area to recommend books to each other, and a place to find book suggestions with a personal touch.
Have a book to recommend? Send it to Zach at casaurracaltd@gmail.com – title, author, and the reason you suggest it.
The full Locals’ Picks list is available to view here on Bookshop. A purchase from Casa Urraca's link helps support independent bookstores. Abiquiu’s Casa Urraca Press earns a commission from every shopping trip that starts with the above Bookshop link—you can shop the entire Bookshop site in addition to the locals' picks. Plus, a percentage of every book (at least 10%) goes straight to independent bookstores. This is an opportunity to support small businesses with the same convenience as large online retailers. We’ll learn to pluck the threads that connect unrelated ideas, in order to mine new depths in our writing. This generative workshop, Casa Urraca Press's most popular offering to date, requires no formal training and strengthens writers of all genres. (We will focus on short poetry in order to gain functional practice in a two-hour course. The skills practice can apply to all forms of creative writing.)
Registration is now open. In honor of National Poetry Month, this workshop is just $22. Can't make the live session? No problem! All registered participants will be sent a recording of the workshop, complete with writing exercises. Assistance is available -- contact Zach through the Press website to request. Abiquiu Book ClubThe group has compiled the list of books they plan to read for 2025. Check this out and mark your calendar if you wish to join in the discussions.

Lenten Special
JuneWhen June arrived, she was a shadow of the dog she was meant to be—rescued from a horse trailer crammed with 16 other dogs, including her own pups, hungry, scared, and unsure if humans could be trusted. But even then, she showed glimmers of hope, accepting food with quiet gratitude. Now, after our staff has poured love into her, she’s overflowing with affection and light-hearted joy. This 1.5yo anatolian/pyr mix has blossomed, stealing the hearts of everyone at the shelter with her transformation. She’s learned the bliss of head rubs, full-body scritches, and the simple magic of cheese and turkey treats. June is deeply loving, and eager to trust those who show her kindness. June is still finding her way, preferring male dog companions and needing a patient adopter who understands that trust, for her, can be a slow and beautiful thing. But for the person willing to give her that chance? She’ll give back a love deeper than words. It’s now June’s time to bloom! Adopt her from the shelter: spayed, vaccinated, microchipped and with six months of free heartworm prevention.
We are open to walk-in adopters Monday-Saturday 11am-4:30pm! www.espanolahumane.org 505-753-8662 MaggieMiss Maggie is a calico with a heart as colorful as her coat! Like a tiny patchwork quilt of autumn leaves, spiced chai, and warm sunsets, Maggie is a vision of calico charm. At five years old, this gentle girl is looking for a patient and loving home where she can truly shine. Maggie’s journey began as a stray, but a kind-hearted Good Samaritan took her in and showed her the first glimpses of love. Maggie tried her best to befriend the resident cats, but they weren’t quite ready for a new friend. Still, Maggie remained as graceful as ever—never pushy, never unkind, just a little unsure of where she fit in. She carries a tiny secret—a harmless umbilical hernia—but it’s nothing a quick visit to our clinic can’t fix. As for dogs, she hasn’t met any here, but with the right introduction, she might just surprise you. With patience, love, and a cozy spot by a sunny window, Maggie is sure to blossom into a devoted companion. This five-year-old 11lb kitty with a coat of many colors is just waiting for the right person to see the beauty not only on the outside but on the inside too!
