From Carol
Growing up in Chicago I had no idea what “Hyperlocal Journalism” meant, and yet in our neighborhood we had a great example of it. The Lincoln Belmont Booster, once a twice weekly newspaper gave us all the “hyperlocal” news we could use. I remember an old quote I read from the founder that his readers were more concerned about a fight that broke out on Clark Street than the war in Europe. While I don’t share those exact sentiments, I do think almost twelve years ago we discovered a niche for a local news website, and a venue for area information. For those of you that might not be familiar with Hyperlocal Journalism, it is a type of news reporting that focuses on a specific geographic area, such as a neighborhood, town, or county. It's characterized by its community focus. Hyperlocal journalism covers news that's usually not covered by larger media outlets. For us it means covering issues affecting our local rural communities, supporting the nonprofits and businesses that serve our area. We keep you informed about fires and floods, County information, water issues, local events and announcements, interviews with residents, as well as what’s blooming in Abiquiu (nothing right now). Dining, Lodging, Arts, Classified Ads, and Real Estate listings, everything local. We encourage reader input and interaction. We want to hear from you. Have an article you’d like to submit, or something you think would be of interest? We want to hear from you. Email us! If you have the means we ask that you consider a paid subscription or a single donation in our year end fundraiser. All paid subscriptions and donations will be matched by NMLocal News up to $7500 and are earmarked for local coverage in our area. Click on Subscribe or Donate below or send a check into Abiquiu News, PO Box 1052, Abiquiu NM 87510
Dolores and Emery have been married for 48 years. They have lived in Abiquiu for 33 years. They have two sons and four grandchildren.
Dolores and Emery both had successful previous careers prior to Real Estate. These career experiences facilitate their current career in Real Estate, providing so many additional skills to assist clients. Emery graduated from New Mexico State University, from the College of Engineering, with a degree in Civil Engineering. He worked 28 years in management for electrical distribution cooperatives. This career provided much experience in surveying, working with staff, and his constituents. He served on boards that worked for the good of their constituents. Having lived and worked in Northern New Mexico, provided much knowledge of the different communities, from Santa Fe north to the Colorado border. Emery knows the land, the communities, and processes involved in acquiring the essential resources related to rural home and land ownership. Dolores graduated from New Mexico State University, from the College of Education, with a degree in Elementary Education, with a focus in Early Childhood Education. As an Educator she taught many students in the Espanola Public Schools, Cuba Independent Schools, and Jemez Mountain School districts. This career has provided Dolores the skills to guide home buyers and home sellers, through the the real estate process, as well as facilitate newcomers to the community resources available. Together, Emery and Dolores are a wealth of knowledge to their clients. They know the different communities. They know how to communicate with people in a professional and friendly manner. They have been Realtors for about 15 years and are part of The Maez Group, a Real Estate Group founded by their son, Joe Maez. The Maez Group, for the past six years, have been the number 1 Real Estate Team in the state of New Mexico, based on sales. This accomplishment has been earned by providing the best real estate services to their clients, and establishing long lasting relationships with the people they serve. Real Estate, to Emery and Dolores, is an opportunity to share with pride the communities they know and love with people who want the quality of life Northern New Mexico has to offer. When I tried to get in touch with Colin for the Abiquiú News, I learned that Noble Hospitality, his hotel management company, is based in Manhattan. Oh dear! He’d be way too busy to talk to me, I feared. But a friendly note from Bridget McCombe, Colin’s partner, assured me that they’d find the time for a chat next time they’d be in Abiquiú. And she set me straight: they’re located in Manhattan, Kansas! Apparently, I’m not the only one to mix up Kansas and New York; Colin had a delightful story to share about just that. Read More

Cocoa
Cocoa, available for adoption from our Puppy Patch at Ojo Santa Fe, is the most magical gem with one wintergreen eye and one ice-crystal blue eye. He’s his own Aurora borealis! This two month old tricolor pup is playful, curious, and carries an exuberant charm that’s as captivating as a frost-kissed morning. Cocoa is pure enchantment: one side of his sweet face sparkles with an aquamarine and the other glimmers with emerald, and his fur makes you want to melt into the couch for cuddles. This little star is neutered, up to date on vaccines, microchipped, and goes home with six months of free heartworm prevention. Submit an application on our website to meet Cocoa at the resort in Santa Fe — whether bounding through snowdrifts or curling up by the fire, he will fill your days with joy, wonder, and the kind of love only a magical puppy can give.

Jax and Scout
We would have named this pair Whitney Houston and Kevin Costner, had we known. Cue the power ballads because this bonded pair is serving an Oscar-worthy performance of “The Bodyguard.” On one paw we have Jax, our Whitney, who is a sassafras tabby with a flair for the dramatic. If you dare to contaminate his fabulous fur with your human touch, he’ll pause, give you a scandalized blink, and immediately start grooming the “offending area” as if to say, “How dare you tamper with my tresses, poison my perfection?!” The audacity! Then there’s serious Scout, his loyal lil security detail, the Kevin Costner bodyguard of this duo. Scout’s sole mission in life is to protect Jax from all threats and injustices—real or imagined. He will literally use his body as a shield to deflect pets and protect Jax from the inferiority of humans. These six-month-old kitties have been with us for nine weeks! We need to move this movie into a home theater - they deserve a better audience and their love story deserves its own soundtrack!
