Sotano Prescribed FireNew Mexico Fire Information
Near El Rito and Vallecitos (Rio Arriba County) This unit is 2,365 acres to the north of El Rito and west of Vallecitos (map). Ignitions are expected to last two to four days. It is off Forest Road 44 and partially between the 2019 Francisquito and 2022 Midnight Fire burn areas on the west and the 2023 Alamosa Unit 1 Prescribed Fire to the east. Work is part of the El Rito Canyon Restoration Project to restore forest, watershed and wildlife habitat health, reduce threats of wildfire to communities and infrastructure and increase the availability of personal-use wood products. The project is part of the wider Rio Chama Collaborative Forest Landscape Restoration Project, which aims to protect forest communities and increase the health of the area watershed, which serves millions of people downstream. Rio Chama: Streamflow below El Vado Lake Monday morning was 97 cfs; streamflow below Abiquiu Lake Tuesday morning was 140 cfs. Fishing for trout below Abiquiu Lake was slow. Please remember, from the river-crossing bridge on U.S. Highway 84 at Abiquiu upstream 7 miles to the base of Abiquiu Dam is special trout waters with a bag limit of only two trout. October 18-November 22 Fridays, 10 am-12 pm, El Rito Campus, Alumni Hall 6 week class, $40 The Chinese art of Tai Chi is a moving meditation and whole-body exercise for maintaining and building the health of mind and body. This class will introduce the long-form Tai Chi set as taught by Master May Lin-Sin, with a focus on basic principles. Intended for people who are new to Tai Chi; no experience is required. It is also appropriate for those who have completed this course before and wish further practice. Chama Schools is inviting homeschooled students to attend enrichment activities on district scheduled Fridays at the Chama unit. Homeschooled students will get to spend the day with their age group, walk over to the arts center for an hour and a half of arts and crafts (next week it will be bean mosaics), and dive into the 3-D printing lab, music and more with the Northern NM ROC Foundation. For inquiries contact us, or call either elementary school. Lastly, after 3 years of being open and always having a little more on our plates than we could really manage, we have decided to spend this Fall cleaning and organizing so that we can start programs this winter utilizing all of our space to the fullest. We need shelving at the arts center. We will be ordering a couple different kinds this week. If you have some shelves you can donate, email, call, or text right away.
