Weekly WeatherIn GratitudeWe couldn't do it with you! Thank you to these sponsors - El Rito Library and the generous anonymous donor that pays for this sponsorship. We thank Bruno and Julie of Home Construction Doctor and the amazing David Michael Kennedy for his artist sponsorship.
Many thanks to our anonymous donor who once again has kindly paid an El Rito Library sponsorship for the Abiquiu News. The News is such an asset for our region! We’re so grateful to now and then have their extraordinary help to get the word out about our events and programs.
Our little library tucked away in El Rito has been a grass-roots community library for some 39 years. We’re one of those “under-resourced” libraries in New Mexico mentioned recently in an Abiquiu News article by Shel Neymark, our long-time advocate for better funding for the state’s small rural libraries. As a non-profit 501 (c) 3 organization, we may be under-resourced, but we’ve no lack of books and patrons remarkably passionate about books. Old books, new books, bad books, good books, fat books, skinny books – they all have redeeming value. Just visit us on a Friday, right before closing time and you’ll find our most prolific readers amassing a stack of volumes for check-out as if they’re going on a long sea voyage without internet access to e-books. Fortunately, we’re not lacking in books from which to choose. A well-curated collection of 16,000 books and DVD movies and documentaries grace our shelves. And recently we’ve signed up for Libby’s e-books to add to our already remarkable inventory. As always, we struggle to keep up with needed expenses. Individual donations are down this year but attendance at events and programs is up. Demands are also up for our basic library services of good internet & wi fi, fax, use of our state-of-the art copy/scan/print machine, our meeting rooms for community groups, our quiet spaces for work, our magazine subscriptions for browsing. Please come visit us at our annual Open House & Library Talk this Saturday, September 28 between 1:00 and 3:00 pm. The talk begins at 1:30, followed by cake and coffee/tea. Visit us online The Home Construction Doctor, LLC, owned and operated by Bruno Lindner, a native of Munich Germany, reflects the excellence and training of German Quality Craftsmanship.

News and Features
When you think of books and art, you might think of Nobel-prize winning authors such as John Steinbeck or Thomas Mann, or of books of poetry where every word is carefully crafted and positioned. But one rarely thinks of the physical book itself – the paper, or the way the words are printed. Not so for long-time Abiquiú resident Pam Smith: she belongs to a relatively small group of people who dedicate their art to the way the book looks. Everything is done by hand: the printing, the binding, even the paper. Read More

Did you know that there are hundreds of different varieties of garlic? I didn’t, and I had no idea that there are two subspecies of Allium sativum, the relative of onions, leeks, chives etc., distinctive because of its pungent odor and taste. It took a visit with La Madera garlic farmer Bill Page and his wife Claudia to divest me of my ignorance. And as it so often happens with these interviews, it was a delight to meet my hosts and experience where they live. The scenery around La Madera is absolutely stunning. Read More
Free at-home Covid tests ReturnSANTA FE — Yesterday, the Biden administration announced that it is providing $600 million in funding to produce new at-home COVID-19 tests and is restarting a website allowing Americans to again order up to four free tests per household — aiming to prevent possible shortages during a rise in coronavirus cases that has typically come during colder months.
"Don't wait for symptoms to appear! Get ahead of the curve with free COVID-19 tests delivered to your doorstep,” said Patrick Allen, secretary for New Mexico Department of Health. “Order now and stay one step ahead of the virus." The federal Department of Health and Human Services says orders can be placed at COVIDTests.gov starting Sept. 25, and that no-cost tests will be delivered for free by the United States Postal Service. The tests are designed to detect COVID variants currently circulating and are intended for use by the end of the year. But they will include instructions on how to verify extended expiration dates, the department said. The New Mexico Department of Health recommends everyone 6 months and older get an updated COVID-19 vaccine to protect against the potentially serious outcomes of COVID-19 illness this fall and winter. In addition, everyone is eligible for and should get the flu vaccine, especially adults 65 and older and pregnant people in their first and second trimesters, according to the CDC. Co-infections of COVID-19 and the flu can be severe. Vaccination is your best protection from respiratory viruses, and it’s important to get the flu vaccine before the height of flu season. Getting your vaccine in September or October is highly recommended. "Double your protection, double your peace of mind. Get vaccinated against COVID-19 and the flu this season to keep yourself and your community safe," said Miranda Durham, MD, New Mexico Department of Health Medical Director. To find an appointment, members of the public can view the interactive map at VaccineNM.org or schedule appointments directly with pharmacies and healthcare providers. Some New Mexico providers have reported delays in vaccine deliveries, so if you can’t find an appointment immediately, please be patient. Those interested in accessing their vaccine history can do so at VaxViewNM.org. Support for login issues is available through the NMSIIS Help Desk at 833-882-6454. COVID-19 vaccines remain readily accessible at no cost through private health insurance, Medicare, and Medicaid. Uninsured individuals can receive the COVID-19 vaccine free of charge through a network of health centers, public health offices, and participating pharmacies in the CDC's Bridge Access Program, ensuring universal vaccine access. Vaccination remains the most effective defense against COVID-19-related hospitalization, death, and the lingering effects of Long COVID. If you haven't received a COVID-19 vaccine in the past two months, consider getting an updated dose to safeguard yourself this fall and winter. Flu and RSV vaccines are readily available at healthcare providers and pharmacies throughout the state. If you need assistance with scheduling, contact the DOH Call Center at 1-855-600-3453, which is available M-F 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. and weekends 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. For more information about DOH’s Immunization Program visit the website.
