Previous article Last week I attended the official kick off for Kit Carson’s project to bring broad band to Abiquiu and surrounding communities, along 84, 96 and 554. This is in with collaboration with Jemez Electric, USDA and NRTC (National Rural Telecommunication Cooperative). The plan is to bring fiber optic service to 4000 households. Work is expected to start in early 2025. The fiber will be utilizing Jemez poles and should reach many. But what about the folks that have buried electric or are off grid? I asked Luis Reyes, Chief Executive Officer and General Manager at Kit Carson what their plans were to service those folks. Their ultimate hope is to service all the households but it would help to get a sense where the needs are. Abiquiu News volunteered to help compile that information. Will this also affect Ghost Ranch? Their wifi could certainly use some improvements... thanks for your response.

Ghost Ranch has their own fiber optic. They may need to expand their WiFi network.

If the shaded area indicates where the new service will be, then it looks like Laguna Acres will not get service. Laguna acres access gate to the community is exactly 1 mile north of HWY 96 on the east side of the Abiquiu Reservoir. There is a Windstream marker at the gate that indicates a buried fiber optic cable, but after 5 years and 1000 emails and phone calls trying to get service, the windstream manager told me if I wanted service it was going to cost me $500,000.00. I never spoke to anyone again after that.

Verizon offers wireless wifi service now...no cables or fiber optic required. However, they have to support it in the area which I believe requires at least 3G. I use in Albuquerque and will bring the unit to Abiquiu to test it out this weekend (as it's portable), switching from another more costly cable provider and am impressed with it over the past month - there have been no issues or difference in speed I can determine, just less expensive,
