Windows 10 Upgrade Assistant

10/25/2019

The most straightforward way I can think of to upgrade to Windows 10 from Windows 7 is to use the Windows 10 Upgrade Assistant. You can find it HERE:

Click to download the update assistant. This will lead you to download the Windows 10 upgrade program, without actually doing the upgrade immediately, so you have time to ponder the whole thing. It will take hours to complete, so let it run. At some point you will be asked what type of install, which likely means you will select to KEEP all your programs and files.

Then you will be asked to actually update to Win 10. Hopefully it will work for you. I did have someone who had a problem with the update, so please backup what’s important to you, just in case. It will also take quite a while to complete the upgrade, after which, Win 10 will guide you through some questions. When it completes, you should have a nice clean version of Windows 10, version 1903.

When it’s all done you may or may not have an activated copy of Windows 10. In any case, it will work just fine. If it comes up with a watermark at the bottom right corner, your Windows will still work. (Microsoft suggests you purchase a licence). I had a valid copy but when I swapped out my motherboard it decided it was no longer activated and the automated phone support wouldn’t give me an activation code. That was 2 years ago and it’s still running.

Is Your Digital Life Ready for Your Death?

10/18/2019

You’ve probably thought about what will happen to your finances, your possessions and maybe even your real estate when you die. But what about your Facebook account? Or your hard-drive backups?

For the past two decades, most of us in the modern world have gradually shifted our central living space online. That’s 20-ish years of documenting our real-life experiences while also creating entirely new versions of ourselves in countless places online.

These digital lives are basically immortal, so you may as well figure out while you’re still alive what will happen to them after you’re gone.

There are two main things to consider: What will happen to your accounts and what will happen to the data contained therein. For example, you can give someone authority to delete your Google account and to download all your photos stored there after you die.

Malwarebytes

Over the years I’ve written about Malwarebytes many times. It’s the only anti-malware program I pay for. I like the free versions of many programs, but Malwarebytes I am willing to pay for from experience. The experience is from the many times Malwarebytes has fixed a problem computer, mine, and many other peoples.

They’ve been sending newsletters to me, which I do not often read. Occasionally there will be one that catches my eye, but usually I pass. One of the authors on the site has a page for the articles she’s written, and I am including it HERE.

She has some interesting articles on STALKERWARE. You probably know, at least vaguely, that your phone is a GPS device, it maps in a few ways, like getting you to an address you are not familiar with. However, it’s a 2 way street, and your phone can lead others to you. Carol and I actually set that up in our phones on purpose, and it’s a common thing for parents to use for their children. The problem arises when you don’t want it or when it’s being done by a stranger.

Don’t freak, like most scenarios, that is not common, just something you should know about. Read the article if it interests you.

WiFi Calling

10/4/2019

There are two ways we can use our phone.  We connect to a cell signal.  This is the most common when we are on the road.  We can also have WiFi enabled which allows us to download mail, browse the internet, etc.  But if you want to make a phone call using WiFi you have to have WiFi calling enabled.  This was great when we were in Europe but it can work for you at home where you might not have a cell signal.  If you have internet and have good WiFi, you can make a call enabling WiFi calling. You may need to have a cell phone signal when you enable this on your phone so you might need to enable it when you have that signal but once you have it enabled you can use your phone at home or abroad, wherever you get a WiFi signal without using minutes or data.

How to turn on WiFi calling for your iPhone
  1. Open the Settings app.
  2. Tap Phone > Wi-Fi Calling.
  3. Switch the Wi-Fi Calling on This iPhone slider to On.
  4. You'll see a warning about location data and what your carrier collects. Tap Enable to turn on Wi-Fi Calling.

How to Activate and Use WiFi Calling on Android
  1. Go to your phone’s Home screen .
  2. From the Home screen, swipe down from the uppermost part of the screen to expand...
  3. With the Notification bar opened, tap on the Settings icon located in the upper-right corner...
  4. Open the Connections option from Settings.
  5. Tap on the Wi-Fi calling option
