I know I’ve written about storage before, and how it relates to memory. I am going to post an article that I think explains different types of storage really well. The reason I want to talk about this is because it’s an option in buying a new PC (Macs already come with solid state drives nowadays). Another reason is because you can upgrade some older computers to use the MUCH faster SSD, and you can get better performance out of that older machine.
A quick refresher: memory is where most of the actual computations happen. It’s measured in gigabytes these days, and is usually a lower number, say 4Gb to 16Gb. You can have more, or less, but in comparison, the hard drive will be in hundreds of Gigabytes, or thousands. A thousand Gb is a Terrabyte. That’s pretty big, and some people might need that much. My hard drive, an SSD, is 250Gb and I have 30Gb free. That’s OK. I probably have well over 100Gb I can delete without thinking. And I would not want to go much less than my 30Gb free, for performance issues. The hard drive is just storage. It’s where programs and data are saved until needed. The CPU is the brain. It can be measured by the amount of cores, and the speed of the cores. A core is like a whole brain. Multiple cores allow for more work to be done at the same time, getting it done much faster, and a faster core just works faster (it’s measured in Gigahertz). More memory gives more workspace, so that also helps the speed of the computer. And a faster hard drive will provide the work materials and instructions to the brain and the workspace quicker, which also adds to enhanced overall performance. Ahh, it’s like being 18 years old again, except without being so stupid. That’s a simplified overview. Since I’m really writing about storage, the hard drive, and the various hard drive options, I’ll just give you the link to that article I was talking about, HERE.
