I haven't had to deal with any seriously messed up computers lately, which is nice. What seems to be happening now though, is more subtle. Companies do something called 'hijacking' where you do a search on something in a browser, and your search is redirected to what the hijacker wants you to see. This can also involve pop-ups, where some type of pop-up window can display, sometimes taking up the entire screen, and sometimes can be very threatening. These are more than annoyances in that there is also tracking being done. programs can be installed without your knowledge, and this can often lead to more problems. While I do think these are real threats, I also think many antivirus companies propose more fear than is necessary to get you to buy their products, and generally speaking, antivirus software can have a negative impact on the overall performance of your computer, particularly older or less robust computers. I like MalwareBytes as a product and prefer it to standard antivirus suites. While I do think there is still some fear mongering going on, I also think having some protection is important. We buy the 3-pack license from them, though I put the free version on pretty much every computer I work on. I also put CCleaner on, which is a great cleaner of Windows computers, which generate much more crap than Macs. There are links to downloads for both of those if you're interested. Mac CCleaner.
